In a stark revelation, former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Babaatunde Johnson Kokumo has emphatically stated that no region in Nigeria is immune to the gripping menace of insecurity.

Addressing a gathering as the guest speaker during the World Radio Day event organized by the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) in Ogun State’s capital, Abeokuta, DIG Kokumo shed light on the widespread challenges faced by every section of the country.

DIG Kokumo underscored the severity of the security issues, citing various forms of criminal activities plaguing the nation, including kidnapping, banditry, murder, piracy, cultism, and bombings.

He passionately called upon the citizens, emphasizing that combating insecurity is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement but a collective duty of the community.

“I appeal to those engaged in radio presentation to use this medium to fight crime and criminalities in Nigeria,” urged DIG Kokumo, highlighting the critical role of media in addressing these challenges.

His address painted a grim picture, acknowledging the prevalence of insecurity across the nation, encompassing issues such as pipeline gas vandalization, IPOB activities, unrest in the middle belt, and the persistent threat of Boko Haram in the northeast.

The Deputy Inspector General stressed that no community in Nigeria remains untouched by the various criminalities happening, urging citizens to be vigilant and prepared to combat crime.

The call to action was not limited to law enforcement but extended to the broader population.

He stated, “I appeal to those engaged in radio presentation to utilize this medium in combating crime and criminal activities in Nigeria.

“There is scarcely any section in Nigeria today that is not grappling with insecurity, including issues such as kidnapping, banditry, murder, piracy, cultism, bombing, pipeline gas vandalization, IPOB, unrest in the middle belts, and Boko Haram in the northeast, among others.

“No community in Nigeria is exempt from these criminal activities. It is now our collective responsibility as members of the Nigerian community and as citizens to be prepared to fight against crime and criminalities.”

In a bid to address related concerns, DIG Kokumo also urged Nigerians to unite against the phenomenon of indiscriminate traveling abroad, colloquially known as “Japa.”

He called for collective efforts to eliminate this trend and ensure the stability and well-being of the country.

The occasion witnessed the presence of notable figures, including the former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Sarafa Isola, who lauded the pivotal role of radio in national development. Isola, honored as an Outstanding Nigerian Diplomat along with Senator Adeola Olamilekan, advocated for other states to follow Ogun State’s example in leveraging radio for development.

Various dignitaries attended the event, such as the Wife of the Governor of the state, represented by Mrs. Grace Oladeyinde, the wife of the Permanent Secretary, the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babaatunde Ajayi, the Apena Egba, Chief Alani Bankole, award-winning Broadcaster Mr. Olusesan Ekishola, and Chairman of Fresh Fm Nigeria, Dr. Yinka Ayefele, represented by Assistant Manager of Fresh Fm Abeokuta, Yinka Adegbite.

FIBAN also took the opportunity to honour individuals for their contributions, including presenting the Humanitarian Award to the Wife of the Governor, the Game Changer award to Yinka Ayefele, and acknowledging the former president of FIBAN, Desmond Nwachukwu, with the Outstanding Performance award.

The event served as a platform to emphasize the vital role of media in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the nation.
