Northern Govs Against Tax Reforms Are Lazy, Responsible For Insecurity – Shinkafi

The Executive Director of Patriots for Advancement of Peace and Social Development, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has launched a scathing critique against Northern governors opposing President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, labeling them “lazy” and accusing them of contributing to the region’s insecurity and economic woes.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Monday, Shinkafi condemned the governors for their lack of initiative to develop internal revenue generation strategies.

He argued that their stance against the reform bills was a reflection of poor leadership and a failure to address the pressing issues plaguing the northern region.

“These governors, who claim the tax reform bills will exacerbate hardship in the North, are the ones responsible for the failure of the economy, chronic insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and educational backwardness in the region,” Shinkafi asserted.

Shinkafi defended the controversial tax reforms, dismissing the criticism from northern governors as politically motivated and rooted in misinformation.

He emphasized that the reforms were designed to address systemic revenue challenges and promote national economic growth.

He also rebuked the Northern Youth Assembly for their attacks on the Deputy Senate President, who presided over the legislative proceedings on the bills, describing their actions as “uncalled for.”

He maintained that the Deputy Senate President was simply fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities.

Shinkafi’s comments add to the ongoing national debate over the proposed tax reforms, which have faced opposition from various quarters.

While proponents argue that the reforms will bolster the nation’s revenue base, critics fear they could worsen the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly in underdeveloped regions like the North.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the  tax reform bills are part of President Tinubu’s broader economic agenda, aimed at addressing Nigeria’s fiscal challenges and reducing dependency on oil revenues.
