The Nigeria Revenue Service has announced the rollout of a new Taxpayer Identification system for all taxable persons across the country, in a move aimed at strengthening tax administration and eliminating duplication.
The agency, in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board, disclosed this in a public notice issued on Monday, stating that the new Tax ID would serve as a single, unified identity for taxpayers, replacing the existing Tax Identification Number system.
According to the notice dated May 18, 2026, the initiative is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable individual and entity in Nigeria to obtain the new identification number.
The authorities said the reform is part of broader efforts to consolidate taxpayer records, enhance transparency, and improve efficiency in revenue collection nationwide.
“The Tax ID will provide a unified framework for identifying taxpayers across all jurisdictions, thereby eliminating duplication and strengthening the integrity of the tax system,” the statement read.
The agencies added that the new system would also improve service delivery and facilitate seamless interaction between taxpayers and revenue authorities.
As part of the transition, the current TIN Validation Application Programming Interface will be discontinued. Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as financial institutions and other relevant organisations, have been directed to integrate their systems with the new Tax ID platform.
The notice further advised organisations seeking integration or validation services to contact the Joint Revenue Board’s Standardisation and Modernisation Department via its official communication channel.
The development signals a major shift in Nigeria’s tax administration architecture, with stakeholders expected to align with the new regime in the coming months.
