Christopher Oluchukwu, a commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has been convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment by Justice Abbas Bawale of Katsina State High Court 3.
This verdict follows a case brought against Oluchukwu by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), highlighting the grave consequences of employment fraud.
Oluchukwu’s conviction stems from allegations of defrauding Nigerian citizens seeking employment opportunities for their children within the NSCDC.
The ICPC revealed that Oluchukwu was found guilty on all nine counts filed against him, relating to the fraudulent collection of funds totaling N900,000 from three separate individuals.
The commission stated “In the case filed by ICPC at the Katsina State High Court 3, the convict was accused of receiving the sum of N200,000:00, N300,000:00 and N400,000:00 respectively, from three individuals under the pretext of securing jobs for their children with the NSCDC.
“The victims had reported the matter to ICPC after the convict failed to procure the said job and refused to refund their money.”
PLATFORM TIMES reports that during the trial, the court heard how Oluchukwu exploited his position within the NSCDC to deceive unsuspecting victims under the guise of securing job placements for their children.
Despite receiving substantial sums of money, he failed to fulfill his promises, prompting the victims to report the matter to the ICPC.
Ibrahim Garba, counsel to the ICPC, emphasized that Oluchukwu’s actions violated Sections 8, 10, and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
The charges brought against him detailed instances where he unlawfully obtained funds from individuals in exchange for job opportunities within the NSCDC.
In delivering the verdict, Justice Bawale found Oluchukwu guilty on all counts and handed down a five-year prison sentence without the option of fine.
Additionally, the judge ordered that the sentences be served concurrently.
Despite Oluchukwu absconding after jumping bail, the court directed the arrest of his sureties for further investigation.
