The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has ordered an immediate suspension of media coverage of all activities of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the state, following the alleged assault of a journalist, during the 2025 May Day celebration in Abeokuta.

The journalist, identified as Olajide Osoba, a member of the Union, was reportedly attacked by individuals believed to be members of NANS at the June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto — the venue of the event.

In a statement e-signed by the Council’s Secretary, Bunmi Adigun, and made available to PLATFORM TIMES, the NUJ condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as a direct attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists in the line of duty.

“The Council views the attack on Mr. Osoba as not only barbaric but a threat to the constitutional responsibility of the media,” the statement read in part.

“Until a thorough investigation is carried out and the perpetrators brought to book, all NUJ members in the state are hereby directed to cease coverage of all NANS-related activities.”

The Union called on the leadership of NANS in Ogun to cooperate fully with the investigation and take concrete steps to ensure such attacks do not recur.

While reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights and safety of its members, the NUJ noted that the decision to blacklist NANS events was to underscore the importance of journalist protection in a democratic society.

Further developments on the matter will be made public as investigations progress, the Union assured.
