The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has voiced strong disapproval of the rising ‘get-rich-quick’ mentality among Nigerian youths, warning that the trend undermines societal values and is condemned by both the Bible and the Quran.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by senior officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to his Iga Idunganran Palace, the monarch linked the increasing wave of cybercrime and fraudulent activities to a growing obsession with instant wealth.
“The get-rich-quick syndrome is wrong and should be discouraged. Even the two holy books, the Bible and the Holy Quran, frown at it,” the Oba said, according to a post shared by the EFCC on its official X handle on Tuesday.
Oba Akiolu urged the EFCC not to relent in its campaign against corruption, noting that the agency’s work is critical to restoring moral values in the country.
He pledged the full backing of the Lagos traditional institution to the commission’s anti-graft efforts.
“Your presence here today is a mark of respect, not only to the traditional institution of Lagos but to the enduring values of integrity, justice and collaboration,” he said.
“I am pleased to receive you on this important visit and to assure you of my fatherly support and wise counsel.”
Commending the EFCC for its resolve to combat financial crimes, Oba Akiolu described the anti-corruption war as a shared national duty.
“The fight against corruption is a task that demands the strength of institutions, the wisdom of leadership, and the unity of the people,” he stated.
Earlier, the acting Director of the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Ahmad Ghali, expressed gratitude to the monarch for granting the audience and announced the establishment of a new zonal office in Ikoyi to bolster the Commission’s operations in Lagos.
He acknowledged the pivotal role of traditional rulers in promoting ethical standards in society and voiced concerns over the spike in cybercrime and land-related scams across the state.
“Almost daily, the directorate is inundated with credible intelligence about alleged involvement of youths in cybercrimes across various communities,” Ghali said.
“Another major concern is the growing number of land fraud cases, which now form a significant portion of our caseload.”
Appealing for the monarch’s support, Ghali noted, “Ka’biyesi, I am counting on your support because your voice is deeply respected and carries tremendous influence.
“As a revered king and a retired super cop, you are uniquely positioned to advise us on navigating the complex terrain of economic and financial crimes.”
