Obasanjo Reveals Truth Behind His Controversial Choice Of Yar’Adua As President

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has shed light on why he selected the ailing Musa Yar’Adua as his successor, clarifying that medical advice indicated Yar’Adua’s fitness for the presidency.

Obasanjo, a two-time leader of Nigeria, both as a military head of state (1976-1979) and later as an elected civilian president (1999-2007), disclosed the details behind his choice despite opposition from figures like Abubakar Atiku and Peter Odili within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential race.

In an exclusive interview with TheCable, Obasanjo refuted allegations of favoring weak candidates for personal gain.

He revealed that a committee, led by the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, meticulously evaluated potential successors, ultimately ranking Umaru Yar’Adua as the top candidate.

The committee’s endorsement of Yar’Adua was based on his integrity and presumed absence of corruption.

Concerns about his health were raised, prompting Obasanjo to seek a medical expert’s opinion, keeping Yar’Adua’s identity undisclosed.

The expert concluded that Yar’Adua had undergone a kidney transplant, assuring that his health was not a significant issue.

Obasanjo dispelled any notions that he foresaw Yar’Adua’s demise, emphasizing that his decision was grounded in these assessments and not personal agendas.

This candid revelation offers new insights into a pivotal moment in Nigerian political history.
