Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has explained that his repeated defections across political parties were driven by a desire to unite Nigerians and create a platform for national rebirth.
Obi stated this on Saturday while addressing delegates at the National Democratic Congress convention held in Abuja, where he reaffirmed his commitment to building what he described as a “new Nigeria.”
According to him, his movement is not motivated by political convenience or personal gain but by the need to reposition the country through collective effort and shared values.
“We want to unite Nigeria. We want Nigerians to love one another. That is why people think we are changing parties,” he said.
Drawing a distinction between opportunistic defections and value-driven decisions, Obi noted that while some politicians abandon principles to remain in power, his decision to switch parties was guided by conviction and the pursuit of a better national future.
“We are not changing parties for transaction. Some people change parties based on their principles, while others do so for the opposite reason. We are seeking an opportunity to build a new Nigeria that is possible,” he added.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the symbolic importance of his movement, saying it reflects the same spirit that drove Nigeria’s founding fathers during the independence struggle.
“That symbol represents the resolve our forebears used to fight for independence. It is the same resolve we are deploying to rebuild Nigeria,” Obi said.
Obi’s political journey has seen him move across major parties, beginning with the All Progressives Grand Alliance between 2006 and 2014, before joining the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014.
He later defected to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 presidential election, where he emerged as the party’s candidate. In 2026, Obi joined the African Democratic Congress, but subsequently left for the National Democratic Congress following reported internal crises within the ADC.
Despite criticisms trailing his frequent party switches, Obi maintained that his political decisions remain anchored on his vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria.
