The Ogun State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the establishment of state police in Nigeria, adopting a resolution in support of a proposed constitutional amendment to create State Police Services.
The resolution was passed during plenary on Tuesday following the consideration of a report by the Assembly’s Ad Hoc Committee on Constitutional Review, chaired by a former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo.
The proposed amendment is contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which seeks to provide a constitutional framework for the establishment of state police services across the country.
Presenting the committee’s report, Oluomo led lawmakers through 26 clauses containing proposed amendments to various sections of the 1999 Constitution.
The lawmakers considered the clauses individually and voted in favour of all the proposed amendments.
Following the deliberations, Oluomo moved a motion for the adoption of the committee’s report. The motion was seconded by Adegoke Adeyanju and supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
The House Leader, Yusuf Sherif, subsequently moved a motion for the adoption of the report as an official resolution of the Assembly. The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Omolola Bakare, and received unanimous support from members.
Speaking after the adoption, the Speaker, Elemide, described the decision as historic, noting that Ogun had joined other state legislatures in supporting the proposed establishment of state police.
He said the resolution reflected the position of the lawmakers and the people of Ogun State on the need to strengthen the country’s security framework through measures aimed at improving the protection of lives and property.
According to him, the establishment of state police could contribute to enhanced security, social well-being and economic development in the state.
Elemide subsequently directed that a clean copy of the resolution be transmitted to the National Assembly to formally communicate Ogun State’s position on the proposed constitutional amendment.
The development adds Ogun State to the growing number of state legislatures supporting the establishment of state police as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
However, the Assembly’s resolution represents the state’s legislative position on the proposal and does not, in itself, establish a state police service. The proposal must still undergo the applicable constitutional amendment process before it can become law.
