In a decisive session at the Ogun State House of Assembly, nine commissioner nominees received unanimous approval, marking a significant step in shaping the state’s leadership.
The confirmation followed the withdrawal of Mr. Oshunbiyi Tunde’s nomination by State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun.
The Committee of the Whole House, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, adopted the report presented by Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, who subsequently moved for its acceptance. This motion was seconded by Lukmon Atobatele, solidifying the nominees’ status.
Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff moved a motion for the confirmation of the nominees, seconded by Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, and endorsed through a unanimous voice vote by the entire House during the plenary held at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
According to the committee’s report, “the nominees were found eligible and well-suited for the esteemed role of State Commissioner in Ogun State, with some having previously undergone this process before their prior appointment in the State.”
In other legislative matters, lawmakers deliberated on two pivotal bills: the Obas and Chiefs’ (Amendment) Law, 2023, and the Ogun State Commercial Vehicles and Trucks Law, 2023.
These bills aim to revamp the state’s traditional councils and enhance efficiency and service delivery within the state’s transport sector.
Regarding the bill titled H.B. No. 001/OG/2023, aimed at amending the Obas and Chiefs, Council of Obas and Traditional Council Law of Ogun State, 2021, lawmakers expressed the necessity of regulating the conduct of all categories of monarchs and Chiefs in the State.
Similarly, legislators spoke in favor of the bill titled H.B No. 008/OG/2023, focused on regulating Commercial Motorcycles, Tricycles, Trucks, and other forms of public transportation in Ogun State.
They emphasized its potential to enhance safety for both riders and operators while boosting revenue in the transportation sector, especially for Local Government councils.
Speaker Oluomo praised the lawmakers for their contributions to these bills, recognizing the potential for peace, improved security networks, and accredited insurance schemes for transport operators within the proposed framework.
Subsequently, Speaker Oluomo assigned the two bills to the House Committees on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, as well as Transportation, for further legislative actions.
In a solemn moment, the Assembly paid tribute to Mr. Olusegun Alase, one of the Assembly’s staff members, who passed away earlier in the day, observing a minute of silence in his honor.
