In a bid to enhance the management of health information and promote the efficient utilization of data for healthcare advancement, the Ogun State government has officially launched the Health Data Governance Council (HDGC).

Chaired by Dr. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner for Health, the council includes key figures such as Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan from the Ministry for Budget and Planning, Permanent Secretaries from the Ministry of Health and Hospitals Management Board (HMB), the State Statistician General, as well as representatives from the National Population Commission (NPC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), among others.

During the inauguration ceremony held at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Dr. Coker highlighted the crucial role of the HDGC in optimizing resource allocation for healthcare delivery, a longstanding challenge in the state.

She emphasized its alignment with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to fortify the state’s healthcare systems and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare across both rural and urban areas.

Dr. Coker underscored the importance of reliable data in shaping healthcare policies and enhancing response mechanisms during health crises.

She stressed that the council’s activities would pave the way for more efficient routine healthcare services and expedited interventions during emergencies.

“The significance of this inauguration lies in our imperative need to enhance data management at a strategic level.

While we possess data, its quality is paramount for informed policy-making and resource allocation,” remarked Dr. Coker.

In his remarks, Dr. Kayode Oladehinde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening health data management and governance, urging council members to leverage their expertise in fulfilling their mandates.

In response, Dr. Akinola Fatiregun, the State Coordinator for the World Health Organization (WHO), commended the state government for establishing the council and stressed the importance of prioritizing the collection of high-quality data for effective decision-making in healthcare.
