Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has underscored the pivotal role of public opinion in fostering a strong connection between government and its citizens.

Speaking at the 2023 colloquium of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ogun State chapter, Governor Abiodun emphasized the significance of prioritizing public opinion for a sustainable democracy.

The governor highlighted the profound impact of media and interest groups in shaping public opinion, which in turn influences government policies and actions.

Represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Abiodun stressed that fostering trust and building a lasting democratic society can be achieved through effective management of public opinion.

Governor Abiodun proudly shared the achievements of his administration, including the establishment of housing estates for diverse income groups, a state-of-the-art hospital, a thriving tech industry, and increased foreign direct investment.

These efforts align with his ISEYA mantra, reflecting his commitment to inclusive governance and citizen participation.

Commending the NIPR’s role in promoting the profession, the governor urged a collaborative approach involving the government, media, civil society groups, and the public to harness the potential of pluralism and public opinion management.

This collective effort, he noted, would contribute to overcoming challenges and nurturing sustainable democracy in Nigeria.

The guest speaker, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya of the University of Lagos, echoed the sentiment that pluralism is not a challenge for democracy.

He highlighted the importance of leaders connecting with their diverse constituents and emphasized the need for unity in Nigeria’s multicultural landscape.

In her address, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, Chairman of NIPR, Ogun State chapter, called on PR practitioners to uphold truth, accuracy, and dispel rumors to safeguard the integrity of the country’s democratic system.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including NIPR’s President and Chairman in Council, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, who praised the Ogun State chapter for its unwavering commitment to promoting the PR profession.
