The Ogun State government has unveiled a steadfast commitment to electrify rural areas as part of a strategic initiative aimed at curbing the increasing rural-urban migration trend.

This ambitious endeavour is not only anticipated to enhance the quality of life for rural residents but also to foster economic growth within these communities.

Announcing the initiative, Adetayo Adewale, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, emphasized the state’s unwavering dedication to ensuring a continuous supply of electricity to rural regions.

Adewale highlighted the installation of solar street-lights in locations such as Temidire Ogbonselu in Ayetoro and Biotiku Ashipa in Yewa North, as well as Ado-Odo/Ota local councils.

These installations are part of a larger effort to bring electricity to approximately 20 communities across the three senatorial districts.

Adewale, represented at the event by Ismail Balogun, the Director of Rural Electrification, shared that this initiative was a decisive step toward improving the living conditions of rural dwellers.

By addressing the lack of access to electricity in rural areas, the government aims to mitigate the push factors that contribute to rural-urban migration.

This initiative is projected to significantly reduce the occurrence of such migration.

“The provision of solar electricity to rural communities, which is one of the mandates of the ministry, is to boost the economic activities of the communities, as well as guide against any external forces,” Adewale stated, underscoring the multifaceted benefits of the electrification initiative.

Chief Biala Ogbonselu, Baale of Temidire Ogbonselu, voiced the collective anticipation of the benefiting communities for such developmental projects.

He reassured the government of the communities’ commitment to diligently maintain the newly installed equipment, ensuring their long-term effectiveness.

As the Ogun State government forges ahead with its comprehensive rural electrification program, it reaffirms its dedication to fostering self-sufficiency, economic growth, and improved living conditions within rural areas.

The ongoing efforts are poised to serve as a powerful deterrent to the urban migration phenomenon that has been impacting communities across the state.
