The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State Council, has extended its gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun following his recent approval for an additional ₦2 billion to address outstanding gratuity payments for pensioners in the state.

In a press statement signed by Comrade W.O. Oloyede, Chairman, and Comrade Bola Lawal, Secretary, the NUP executive council conveyed their appreciation for the governor’s generosity.

The statement, made available to our reporter, described the new payment as a “life saver” for the pensioners.

Comrade Oloyede commended Governor Abiodun for his commitment to resolving the backlog of gratuities and for the regular and timely disbursement of monthly pensions.

The union said the  promptness in payments has been crucial for many retirees who depend on these funds for their daily sustenance.

However, the NUP also used this opportunity to appeal for further support.

The NUP  urged the governor to approve the long-awaited consequential increase in pensions, which they believe is necessary to align with the forthcoming adjustments in the minimum wage.

They said  this increase is seen as vital to enhance the economic well-being of retirees, especially in the face of rising inflation and economic challenges.

“The executive council and the entire membership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners hereby express deep and sincere appreciation to our beloved, compassionate, and pensioners-friendly Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun,” the statement reads.

“This additional ₦2 billion is aimed at drastically reducing the backlog of owed gratuities. We are also eternally grateful for the regular and prompt payment of monthly pensions.”

The statement emphasises that the pensioners’ appeal for a consequential increase in pensions is intended to bolster their purchasing power and improve their quality of life amidst the current economic difficulties.

The NUP calls on Governor Abiodun to act swiftly on their request to ensure that retirees can cope with the escalating cost of living before it becomes unmanageable.
