Over three months after a devastating rainstorm wrecked Moslem Comprehensive High School, Imepe, in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, the pupils have been left stranded without classrooms, with no government intervention in sight.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2025, destroyed key structures of the school, exposing hundreds of students to danger and interrupting their education. Despite public outcry, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration has yet to commence any reconstruction or rehabilitation work on the premises.
Civic technology platform, Monitng, raised the alarm on Saturday, decrying the abandonment of the students and warning of the grave risks they now face.
“The affected students have been left roaming the streets during school hours,” Monitng stated in a post. “Some have resorted to swimming in a nearby stream along Old Ijagun Road, putting their lives at risk of drowning and exposure to waterborne diseases.”
The group expressed concern that the prolonged neglect is not only jeopardising the students’ education but also their health and future.
“This is a serious threat to their safety,” Monitng said. “Leaving the school building in its damaged state for this long is worsening the structure. It must be fixed immediately before it becomes an even bigger hazard.”
Beyond its role as a learning centre, Moslem Comprehensive High School also serves as a polling station during elections, further underlining its importance to the local community.
With the Ogun State government announcing a ₦703 billion budget for 2025, critics argue there is no justification for the delay in repairing the school.
Monitng urged Governor Abiodun and Senator Gbenga Daniel, who represents Ogun East in the Senate and is a former governor of the state, to act swiftly to save the students from further hardship.
Efforts to reach the state Ministry of Education for comments on plans for the school’s reconstruction were unsuccessful as of press time.
Meanwhile, concerned parents and community leaders are calling for urgent action, warning that the continued neglect of public education infrastructure could have long-term consequences for the state’s development.
