A Cholera outbreak has sent shockwaves through the Ijebu North Local Government area of Ogun State, prompting immediate action from the state government.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Tomi Coker broke the news .
Coker was however silent on the number of people so far affected .
PLATFORM TIMES reports that many people have lost their lives to the disease last year when it broke in some parts of the state .
While breaking the news on the outbreak, Coker who in a statement obtained by PLATFORM TIMES described Cholera as a disease notorious for its prevalence during the rainy season.
She explained that the disease has its strong association with unsanitary conditions and poor personal hygiene, that has struck the state with a vengeance.
She added that the disease typically manifests through severe diarrhea and vomiting, leading to dangerous levels of dehydration. Without swift intervention, cholera can swiftly claim lives.
In the statement, Coker said pleads for vigilance
In a plea to all citizens of Ogun State, the government has issued a set of urgent directives:
“Reporting Cases: Urgent action is crucial. The government implores individuals to report any instances of diarrhea, with or without vomiting, to the nearest government health facility. Additionally, notifying the Local Government Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) at 08069788449 is paramount.
“Hygiene Measures: Proper personal and environmental hygiene are essential. Regular handwashing, especially before and after using the toilet or eating, is strongly advised.
“Water Safety: The state government stresses the importance of using only clean water sources. Treating water before use and boiling it before consumption are non-negotiable precautions.
“Food Precautions: Thoroughly washing and cooking food before consumption is a vital safety measure to prevent cholera transmission.
“Sanitation Awareness: Open defecation must be combated vigorously, and proper toilet facilities should be utilized.
“Cholera primarily spreads through the consumption of contaminated water or food, making caution in food and water choices paramount during this outbreak.
“The Ogun State Ministry of Health has expressed profound gratitude for the support and cooperation of the citizens during this challenging time.
“The government remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of its people as they grapple with this cholera outbreak.”
