Former Delta State Governor and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has disclosed that he knew ahead of the 2023 presidential election that the PDP presidential ticket of Atiku Abubakar and himself would lose the poll.
Okowa said he had anticipated the eventual outcome of the election and even informed some Christian leaders before the election that the All Progressives Congress would emerge victorious, with the PDP coming second and the Labour Party third.
The former governor made the disclosure at a recent event in Delta State, where he reflected on the political circumstances surrounding the 2023 presidential election.
According to him, his assessment of the political situation at the time convinced him that the PDP ticket would not win the election.
“I knew we would not win the election. And even when I met with the Christian leaders, I told them that APC will win, while PDP will come second and then Labour Party will come third,” Okowa said.
The Independent National Electoral Commission subsequently declared the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, winner of the February 25, 2023 election.
Atiku came second, while the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, finished third, in an outcome that corresponded with the ranking Okowa said he had predicted before the election.
The 2023 presidential election was one of Nigeria’s most closely contested polls, with the three leading candidates securing substantial support across different parts of the country.
Tinubu was declared winner with 8,794,726 votes, while Atiku polled 6,984,520 votes and Obi secured 6,101,533 votes, according to the final results announced by INEC.
The election and its outcome subsequently triggered legal challenges from the opposition candidates, although the courts ultimately upheld Tinubu’s victory.
Okowa’s latest revelation comes amid renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition politicians and parties intensifying efforts to build a coalition capable of challenging the ruling APC..
