In a tragic development, Ondo State governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has passed away.
Akeredolu, who assumed office as governor in 2016, succumbed to a prolonged and undisclosed illness in the early hours of Wednesday.
The governor had been grappling with the unknown ailment for several months, seeking medical treatment, including a recent visit to Germany for further attention.
During a television interview, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Olateju, referred to the governor’s condition as “somatic.”
In light of his health challenges, Akeredolu had temporarily relinquished the reins of the state to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed the role of acting governor.
The news of Akeredolu’s demise was confirmed by a top aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, stating, “Aketi is dead.”
The passing of the governor leaves Ondo State in mourning as they bid farewell to a leader who served the state since his first election.
