Opposition Senators Rally Behind Suspended Colleague, Natasha

A group of opposition senators has pledged to challenge the suspension of Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as they visited her residence on Friday to show solidarity and explore possible resolutions.

The delegation, led by former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, assured Akpoti-Uduaghan of their commitment to addressing what they described as an unjust political decision.

Dickson, notably a member of the Senate Ethics and Privileges Committee—the same committee that recommended her suspension—stated that he was absent during the plenary session where the decision was made due to engagements on tax reform bills.

“As humans, senators have their low and high moments, and it is a tradition for us to stand by each other during these times,” Dickson said while sharing photos from the visit on social media.

He emphasized the importance of unity among lawmakers, noting that the delegation offered prayers, encouragement, and strategic advice to the embattled senator.

“Having listened to her and her husband for the first time, I will discuss with colleagues on possible ways to intervene and engage with the Senate leadership to resolve this matter as soon as possible,” he added.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension, which followed her refusal to accept a reassigned seat in the Senate chamber, has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the rationale behind the decision.

Political analysts and civil society groups have described the action as a suppression of opposition voices within the legislative arm.
