The Osun State House of Assembly has proposed stringent penalties for individuals caught skating on public roads or sidewalks, as lawmakers advance the Osun State Skating Restriction Bill 2025.
During plenary at the Assembly chambers in Osogbo on Tuesday, Speaker Adewale Egbedun announced that the bill prescribes a six-month jail term or a fine of not less than N250,000 — or both — for violators.
Egbedun, who doubles as Chairman of the Committee of the Whole, stated that skating, including roller skating, should remain an indoor activity and not be practiced in public spaces, citing safety and public order concerns.
According to the Speaker, the bill would also empower citizens to apprehend offenders and hand them over to law enforcement authorities.
“Anybody or persons who skate or use roller skates on public roads or sidewalks shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not less than six months or alternative sentencing of payment of sum not less than N250,000 or both,” he declared.
Egbedun further disclosed that the bill would confer concurrent jurisdiction to both the magistrate and high courts across the state to hear such cases.
After deliberations on the Skating Restriction Bill, the Assembly proceeded into a closed session to consider the Osun State Multi-Door Court House Establishment Bill 2025. The sitting was later adjourned to Monday, May 12.
