There was pandemonium in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State after a deceased man’s tongue and testicles were allegedly discovered missing at a private mortuary.
The shocking discovery reportedly led to the arrest of three mortuary attendants by the police, while youths from the deceased’s community vandalised the facility in protest.
The incident occurred at a mortuary located between Afoukwu and Abayi Okoroato village along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene highway.
Family and friends of the deceased had arrived to retrieve the body for burial when they discovered that the tongue and manhood had allegedly been removed.
The development sparked outrage among the accompanying youths, who attacked the mortuary, destroyed property, and assaulted the attendants.
Eyewitnesses said the mob descended on the workers, beating them to a pulp before police officers from the Eastern Ngwa Division intervened and rescued the attendants from further harm.
The suspects reportedly denied any wrongdoing, claiming rodents might have been responsible for the missing parts.
However, residents dismissed the claim, insisting it was unlikely for rats to access and consume internal parts like the tongue.
The incident has stirred fear in the community, with some families reportedly rushing to withdraw the corpses of their loved ones from the facility amid concerns of similar mutilations.
In Igbo tradition, the severing of body parts is seen as a grave taboo, often linked to ritual practices.
The state police command has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
