Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday intervened in a brewing leadership crisis at the Oyo State House of Assembly, halting an alleged plot to impeach the Speaker and restoring calm after hours of tension.
The crisis, which unsettled political circles in Ibadan, followed a reportedly heated closed-door meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the Assembly earlier in the day.
Sources familiar with the development told PLATFORM TIMES that what was expected to be a routine meeting degenerated into a confrontation, with lawmakers sharply divided over an alleged move to remove the Speaker.
The situation was said to have exposed cracks within the ruling party, as legislators split into opposing camps — some resisting what they described as an unjustified impeachment push, while others were believed to be backing a leadership change.
Insiders alleged that certain influential figures were quietly supporting the move, which some lawmakers viewed as politically motivated.
Although claims of high-level backing for the plot remained unverified, they heightened fears of an internal power struggle within the party.
Amid rising anxiety, calls mounted for Makinde’s intervention to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown constitutional crisis.
Responding swiftly, the governor convened an emergency meeting with the aggrieved lawmakers.
Multiple sources confirmed that the meeting proved decisive, with Makinde reportedly taking a firm stance against any move to destabilise the Assembly leadership.
“The meeting with the governor was successful. He made his position clear, and that effectively ended the matter,” one source said.
Another source added, “I can tell you authoritatively that the governor has resolved the issue. Unity has returned to the House.”
Makinde was said to have directed all lawmakers to rally behind the current leadership, stressing the need for unity, discipline and stability within both the legislature and the party.
The directive, according to sources, effectively shut down any ongoing impeachment moves, with lawmakers agreeing to align with the governor’s position.
Though details of the closed-door meeting were not made public, insiders said the outcome reaffirmed confidence in the Speaker and underscored the governor’s preference for internal cohesion over political brinkmanship.
The intervention has since calmed frayed nerves across the state, with indications that legislative activities would resume fully under the existing leadership.
