Patients At Risk As NAFDAC Orders Recall Of Deekins Amoxycillin Batch Over Severe Reactions

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised an alarm over potential health risks after recalling a batch of Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg Capsules linked to severe adverse drug reactions.

The affected batch, with lot number 4C639001, was manufactured by Eco-med Pharma Ltd and distributed by DevineKings Pharmaceutical Ltd.

NAFDAC’s swift action follows reports of three severe reactions in patients who used the medication.

A statement released by the agency on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter) revealed that the cases were reported by a hospital, prompting Eco-med Pharma Ltd to alert NAFDAC to the situation.

“This batch is recalled following reports of serious adverse drug reactions from patients administered with the capsules,” the statement read.

Amoxycillin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic for bacterial infections such as pneumonia, sinusitis, and tonsillitis, is considered essential in combating a wide range of infections.

However, NAFDAC’s findings highlight the risks posed by compromised batches, which could result in severe health outcomes for patients.

The agency has called on healthcare professionals and consumers to discontinue the use of the affected batch immediately.

They also emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging the public to report any suspicious cases of substandard or falsified medicines to NAFDAC offices nationwide.

Reports can also be submitted via the agency’s hotline at 0800-162-3322 or through email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

This incident raises concerns about the oversight of pharmaceutical products distributed within the country.

Experts are urging pharmaceutical companies and regulatory authorities to enhance quality control measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
