Tens of thousands of Peoples Democratic Party supporters on Wednesday thronged major streets and communities across the three federal constituencies in Ogun Central Senatorial District as the party formally commenced its campaign for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
The campaign train, led by the party’s Ogun State governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and its Ogun Central senatorial candidate, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, moved through Ifo/Ewekoro, Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South federal constituencies before culminating in a rally at the Ake Pavilion, Abeokuta.
The flag-off began in the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency, where residents gathered along the streets and adjoining buildings at Agbado Station to welcome the PDP campaign team.
Supporters waved party flags and chanted solidarity songs as Adebutu; his running mate, Hajiya Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo; Obasanjo and other party leaders arrived at the venue.
The campaign train later moved to Abeokuta North Federal Constituency, where the party’s House of Representatives candidate, Arch. Dele Olaleye, is contesting.
A large crowd had reportedly gathered at the NTA Junction, Totoro, as early as 10am to receive the candidates.
The supporters, who sang and chanted in solidarity with the party, expressed optimism about the candidates’ chances in the 2027 elections.
Similar scenes were recorded in Abeokuta South, where the party’s House of Representatives candidate, Toyin Amuzu, is seeking election.
Thousands of supporters joined the campaign convoy to the Ake Pavilion, venue of the Ogun Central senatorial campaign flag-off.
Addressing the rally, Adebutu urged voters in Ogun Central to support Obasanjo, describing her as a tested and trusted candidate with a record of service to the district.
He said the senatorial district needed to reject what he described as non-performance and embrace what he called “liberation” through the PDP.
Adebutu also charged party supporters to turn out en masse for the election, urging them to protect their votes against intimidation.
He said, “Ogun Central must bid farewell to non-performance and vote for liberation.”
The governorship candidate urged voters to cast their ballots for the PDP on January 16, 2027, and remain vigilant until the conclusion of the electoral process.
Also speaking, Obasanjo expressed confidence in her record of service while representing the district.
She said residents had continued to remind her of projects and interventions undertaken during her previous representation, particularly those she said helped people overcome poverty.
Obasanjo promised to build on her previous achievements if elected, saying she would work to ensure that more residents benefited from the dividends of democracy.
The candidates also received pledges of support from residents and party loyalists who spoke at the various campaign stops.
The supporters vowed to vote for the PDP and defend their votes during the 2027 election.
“We will vote and stand by our votes for PDP,” the supporters declared.
