In a decisive move towards enhancing environmental sustainability, Polaris Bank has launched an ambitious campaign to combat plastic pollution and promote responsible environmental behavior.
The bank’s commitment to this cause is part of its core pillars of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investment.
Every day, a staggering amount of plastic waste—millions of tonnes of plastic bottles and polythenes—find their way into drainages, water channels, landfills, and oceans, causing harm to wildlife, air and water pollution, and contributing to climate change challenges such as flooding.
Addressing these concerns has become an urgent priority globally.
With this in mind, Polaris Bank has embarked on its inaugural ‘Beach Clean-Up Initiative’ in Lagos, Nigeria.
The event took place at Elegushi Beach in Lekki, Lagos, in line with the theme of the 2023 World Environment Day, which focuses on solutions to plastic pollution. Executed in collaboration with the Africa Clean-Up Initiative (ACI), an environment-focused Non-Governmental Organization, the clean-up garnered commendations from a wide spectrum of stakeholders.
Polaris Bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond this event.
The bank has actively pursued measures to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Utilizing solar energy to power security lights, ATMs, and business locations, as well as implementing automated systems and digital alternatives to paper output, the bank significantly mitigates waste generation and reduces its carbon footprint.
Furthermore, Polaris Bank has streamlined its vehicle fleet and increased virtual meetings to minimize its carbon footprint. By prioritizing sustainable energy sources and expanding its ATM network to include eco-friendly off-site locations, the bank ensures convenient and environmentally conscious access to its banking services.
During the Beach Clean-Up campaign at Elegushi Beach, Polaris Bank’s Chief, Talent and Culture Officer, Oyiza Salu, emphasized the bank’s commitment to a sustainable future.
She highlighted the initiative’s importance in strengthening staff cohesion and the broader goal of leaving a better world for future generations.
Polaris Bank’s Head of Sustainability and Customer Protection, Yemi Akinrelere, emphasized that the beach clean-up initiative is a form of giving back to the environment and raising awareness about the pressing issue of plastic pollution.
The bank recognizes the need for practical actions beyond discussions in air-conditioned offices and aims to inspire positive change within its community.
Dr. Alexander Akhigbe, Founder/CEO of Africa Clean-Up Initiative, applauded the collaboration with Polaris Bank and highlighted their shared mission to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
