The Nigeria Police Force has made significant strides in its fight against crime, with the arrest of 2,355 suspects across the country within the past month.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that among the high-profile arrests were 199 suspects linked to sexual-related offences and 186 suspected kidnappers.
This development was confirmed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, police operatives apprehended 295 armed robbery suspects, 271 homicide suspects, and 71 individuals found in unlawful possession of firearms.
The force also arrested 143 cultism suspects and a further 1,575 individuals involved in various other crimes during the month-long operation.
In terms of recovery, the police seized 185 firearms and a total of 4,087 rounds of ammunition of different calibres.
The statement also revealed that 111 stolen vehicles were recovered, while 129 kidnapped victims were rescued from various criminal hideouts.
“In more recent events, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have made an outstanding breakthrough in the fight against several types of violent crimes across the country,” Adejobi said.
“One of these is the dismantling and arrest of a gunrunning syndicate operating in the Bauchi-Plateau region.”
“The arrested members of the syndicate were identified as Taimako Mato, John Danladi, Mohammed Munkail, Manasseh William, and Muhammadu Haddi.
“They were apprehended with dangerous arms, including one PKT machine gun, 40 rounds of 37.2mm ammunition, and 95 rounds of 62mm cartridges.
He added that the group was allegedly led by Mato, a former weapon-handling instructor at a Boko Haram camp.
According to police reports, he was responsible for procuring the prohibited weapons, which were then sold to various buyers through the syndicate.
Th statement read that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has reiterated the force’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. In the statement, Adejobi noted,
“The IGP has emplaced several strategies and tactics aimed at combating various forms of crimes in all spheres.
“He once again reassures members of the public of the police force’s dedication to this cause.”
He further urged citizens to support the police in their mission, stressing the need for community cooperation to actualize the goal of reducing crime rates.
“The IGP hereby calls for citizens’ full support in actualizing this goal and establishing a utopia in our dear country,” Adejobi added.
The police have vowed to continue their relentless pursuit of criminals and ensure that law and order are upheld.
“The Nigeria Police Force will not relent in the pursuit of ensuring crimes and criminalities are brought to their lowest in accordance with the Rule of Law,” Adejobi concluded, emphasizing the force’s focus on maintaining professionalism and integrity in their operations.
