The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 persons in connection with the alleged attack on the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed the arrests on Wednesday, saying investigations were ongoing to identify other persons allegedly involved in the incident.
Nwadiogbu said some key leaders suspected to have mobilised youths for the incident were still being tracked by the police.
He warned that the command would not tolerate political intolerance, violence or other forms of disorder as the 2027 general elections approach.
The commissioner said the police had commenced efforts to identify all those involved in the alleged attack, stressing that anyone found culpable would be made to face the law.
“The command will continue to take necessary steps to identify all those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law,” he said.
The development comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with security agencies facing increasing pressure to prevent political violence and protect candidates during campaigns and public engagements.
The police commissioner urged political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions capable of threatening public order.
He assured residents that the command would continue to work to protect lives and property and maintain peace across the state.
The police did not disclose the specific allegations against each of the 46 suspects or indicate whether any charges had been filed against them as of the time of filing this report.
