The Ogun State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 89 motorists for flouting vehicle registration number plate regulations as part of a statewide enforcement exercise aimed at strengthening security and curbing criminal activities.
The command said the operation followed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordering a nationwide crackdown on vehicles operating without registration number plates or with covered, altered or obscured plates.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday, explaining that the exercise was designed to eliminate the anonymity often exploited by criminals.
According to the statement, the police apprehended 89 vehicles and their drivers during the operation, while legal and administrative actions had commenced against the offenders.
The statement read, “During the operations, 89 vehicles and their drivers were apprehended for violating the directive. Appropriate administrative and legal actions have been taken against the offenders in accordance with extant laws and established procedures, including prosecution where applicable.”
The command stressed that the enforcement drive was beyond routine traffic control, describing it as a strategic policing initiative to improve public safety across Ogun State.
It noted that proper vehicle registration would enhance vehicle traceability, strengthen intelligence gathering, aid prompt investigations and deny criminals the opportunity to conceal their identities while committing offences.
The police warned motorists to comply with the directive, stating that the exercise would be sustained across the state and that violators would continue to face sanctions in line with the law.
Meanwhile, the command also announced the arrest of suspected armed robbers in separate operations across the state.
According to the police, operatives of the Ogere Division, in collaboration with the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, local vigilantes and residents, foiled a robbery attack at Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo, on Thursday.
The robbers were said to have invaded a residence and dispossessed occupants of two motorcycles, mobile phones, cash and other valuables before attempting to escape.
However, a swift response by the security team forced the suspects to abandon the stolen motorcycles and flee into a nearby bush.
The police spokesman said sustained combing operations led to the arrest of one of the suspects, identified as Abdulsalam Adam.
He said the suspect was assisting investigators with useful information, adding that a knife, one expended cartridge and a broken padlock were recovered from the scene as exhibits.
The command disclosed that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the robbery gang, while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, for further investigation.
It added that another robbery suspect, identified as Israel Salako, was arrested in a separate operation as the police intensified efforts to rid Ogun communities of criminal elements.
The command reiterated its commitment to sustaining proactive policing strategies aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.
