Kwara State Police Commissioner, Victor Olaiya, has issued a stern warning to vigilante groups against jungle justice.

Answering questions from journalists on the murdered graduate of the University of Ilorin, Lanre Adebayo while parading suspected criminals at the state police command, Ilorin, on Wednesday, he warned the Vigilantes not to take laws into their hands in the handling of suspects.

He stressed the need for proper education on security matters for vigilante groups.

Victor disclosed that “late Lanre got into argument with the vigilante group at Ita-Elepa area of Ilorin metropolis and they decided to teach him a lesson which ended tragically.”

DAILY POST recalls that Lanre Adebayo was on his way home after a visit to his mother in the area.

He was allegedly macheted to death in the encounter with the vigilante group.

Lanre, sources said, was buried on Wednesday, last week at the Oke-Ose public cemetery.

The police commissioner said an investigation into the matter was still ongoing, adding “you know some investigations take time to get to the root of the matter.”

He also referred to another recent incident over which another vigilante group arrested and detained a suspect and demanded N1.5m for his release, forcing a lawyer to petition the police command.
