The Kebbi State Police Command has detained three of its personnel in connection with the controversial death of a suspect, Abubakar Auwal, who died while in police custody.

Spokesperson for the Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the officers were being held pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident, which occurred at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Jega.

According to the statement, Auwal was arrested on April 15, 2025, over a complaint involving stolen trailer truck rims.

While in custody, he reportedly collapsed the following morning and was taken to the General Hospital in Jega, where he was pronounced dead later that night around 10:00 p.m.

“In view of the circumstances surrounding his death, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, has ordered a discreet investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID),” the statement read.

Preliminary investigations reportedly implicated three officers in the matter, leading to their detention.

Additionally, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the affected station has been issued a query and redeployed.

The Police Command emphasized its commitment to professionalism and accountability, stating,

“The actions of a few do not represent the values of the Nigeria Police Force. Disciplinary measures are underway to ensure justice is served.”

While the identities of the detained officers have not been disclosed, the Command reassured the public that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, in line with ongoing police reforms aimed at restoring public trust.
