Police Fire Teargas At Protesters In Abuja

Tensions escalated in Abuja today as Nigerian police officers deployed teargas to disperse demonstrators gathered at Utako, Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory.

The protesters, assembled under the banner of the “Fearless In October” movement, were advocating against perceived governance failures and recent economic policies.

The “Fearless In October” protest, organized via social media channels, echoed previous demonstrations, including the August #EndBadGovernance protests.

Protesters expressed grievances over policies implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates.

These measures, critics argue, have contributed to significant inflation and increased energy costs across Nigeria.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023,President Tinubu has faced mounting criticism over economic hardships exacerbated by the policies.

Petrol prices skyrocketed from approximately N200 to over N1,000 per liter, while electricity tariffs quadrupled, straining both households and the manufacturing sector.

In his address during Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day Anniversary Broadcast earlier today, President Tinubu acknowledged public frustration and urged patience, emphasizing ongoing efforts to mitigate economic challenges.

He reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to implementing measures aimed at stabilizing living costs.

The “Fearless In October” protest underscores persistent public discontent with economic policies and governance issues under the current administration, prompting heightened security measures in major urban centers like Abuja.
