Police Invite Emir Sanusi Over Eid-El-Fitr Killing In Kano

The Nigeria Police Force has invited the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning over a violent incident that claimed the life of a vigilante during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebration in the state.

Sanusi, who led the Eid prayer at the Kofar Mata Eid ground on Sunday, has been asked to appear at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) headquarters in Abuja on April 8.

The invitation follows the killing of Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante from the Sabon Titi Jaba area, who was reportedly stabbed during a clash involving members of Sanusi’s entourage.

The incident occurred shortly after the Eid prayers as the Emir returned to his palace. Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and other top government officials had also attended the prayer session.

In a letter dated April 4 and signed by Commissioner of Police Olajide Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, the force said Sanusi’s presence was “highly sought for a purposeful investigation.”

The police in Kano had earlier inaugurated an eight-member panel to probe the violent outbreak.

According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the panel would investigate both the immediate and remote causes of the violence and determine whether the attack defied the police ban on durbar and horse-riding activities during the Sallah festivities.

Kiyawa confirmed that another vigilante, Aminu Suleman, sustained injuries in the incident. He stressed that the durbar ban had been enforced due to growing security concerns across the state.

“The panel’s terms of reference will focus on unravelling the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident and any disobedience to the command’s directive banning all durbar activities throughout the celebration,” Kiyawa stated.

Also invited for questioning is Wada Isyaku, the Shamakin Kano, in connection with the violence.

The development has stirred tension in Kano, where the traditional durbar procession is a culturally significant activity during Islamic festivals but has recently drawn increased scrutiny from security agencies.
