Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have killed a suspected armed robbery gang member during a gun duel in the Ijaba area of Iyesi, Ota, recovering two vehicles, two pistols and several items suspected to have been stolen.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, following a distress call from a concerned resident who alerted the police to the suspected robbery operation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, explaining that operatives attached to the Onipanu Divisional Police Headquarters, under the Ota Area Command, responded to the emergency at about 1:45 am.
According to him, the suspected robbers opened fire on the operatives upon sighting the approaching police team, triggering an exchange of gunfire that left one gang member dead.
Babaseyi said other members of the gang escaped from the scene with suspected gunshot injuries.
He stated, “On sighting the operatives, the armed robbers opened fire, prompting an immediate tactical response. The ensuing exchange of gunfire resulted in the neutralisation of one suspect, while other gang members fled with suspected gunshot injuries.
“A search conducted after the encounter led to the recovery of two vehicles, a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry, alongside a cache of suspected stolen property.”
Items recovered from the scene included two pistols, several mobile phones suspected to have been stolen, a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number cards and some cash.
The police spokesman said the command had intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation.
He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the rightful ownership of the recovered vehicles and other exhibits, as well as determine whether they were connected to other criminal activities.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their prompt response, professionalism and courage during the operation.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, sustained patrols and rapid responses to security threats across the state.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies, assuring them that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property.
The police command also called for stronger collaboration between residents and law enforcement agencies, stressing that timely and credible information from members of the public remained critical to preventing crime and enhancing community safety.
