The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 23-year-old female student of the Nigerian Law School, Alayande Faith Ajoke, at the institution’s hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The student was reportedly found unresponsive at the hostel in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026, in circumstances that police said remained under investigation.
According to information from the police, the incident was reported at about 6:30 a.m. by the Chief Matron of the Nigerian Law School, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, at the Victoria Island Police Division.
The police said preliminary findings indicated that another student, Ojo Abisoye Tinuola, who had recently completed her internship, raised the alarm after discovering her roommate in distress at about 4:30 a.m.
The Chief Matron reportedly went to the scene and found Ajoke lying on the ground within the hostel premises.
Police sources said preliminary observations suggested that the deceased might have fallen from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building.
The circumstances leading to the incident, however, had yet to be established as of the time of filing this report.
The police also said investigators recovered two notes allegedly left by the deceased, reportedly addressed to her stepfather and roommate.
Detectives from the Victoria Island Police Division subsequently visited the hostel, documented the scene and took photographs as part of efforts to establish what happened.
The remains were later evacuated to the Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for preservation and autopsy.
The police said the autopsy and ongoing investigation would help determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
The command has not announced any conclusion on the cause of death, while details surrounding the alleged fall and the contents or significance of the reported notes remain subject to investigation.
The development has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the death of the young law student, with the police expected to establish the sequence of events that preceded the incident.
