In a bid to foster a culture of reading and enhance literacy skills among pupils in Abeokuta, the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Metro recently organized the Read a Book Challenge Competition as part of its observance of Basic Education & Literacy Month.
The initiative, held under the auspices of Rotary International’s commitment to education, saw enthusiastic participation from students across several metropolitan communities.
The project, which commenced on Monday, September 23rd, culminated in a spirited competition amongst pupils from Basic 1 to 6.
Sixteen finalists emerged from rigorous rounds of reading assessments, showcasing their newfound literary prowess. Popoola Abdulroqueeb of Basic 4 clinched the top honor as the overall winner, with Oladepo Emmanuel and Olowolagba Misturat from Basic 2 securing the first and second runner-up positions respectively.
Rotarian Abiodun Ogundaini, President of the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Metro, emphasized the critical role of basic education and literacy in shaping future leaders and enhancing community development.
“Basic Education and Literacy is a cornerstone of Rotary’s global initiatives,” noted Rotarian Ogundaini, highlighting Rotary International’s commitment to bridging educational disparities and promoting lifelong learning.
Addressing the audience, Rotarian Adeyemi Damilare, Chairman of the Basic Education and Literacy Project, underscored the competition’s aim to bolster communication skills and intellectual development among pupils.
“Events like the Read a Book Challenge are pivotal in instilling a habit of reading early in life,” remarked Damilare, emphasizing the long-term benefits of literacy in personal and professional growth.
Mrs. Olubunmi Asoore, Head Teacher of the host school, commended the Rotary Club for its proactive approach in promoting literacy within the educational landscape of Abeokuta.
“This competition has not only encouraged our pupils to read but has also made reading an integral part of their daily lives,” expressed Mrs. Asoore, highlighting the transformative impact of the initiative on student engagement and academic performance.
Apart from recognizing outstanding achievers, the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Metro distributed cash prizes, gift items, and certificates of participation to all participants.
Additionally, textbooks were donated to each participating class, ensuring sustained educational support beyond the competition.
The Read a Book Challenge underscores Rotary International’s broader mission to empower communities through education, eradicate illiteracy, and foster inclusive learning environments.
With over 250 million children worldwide lacking basic literacy skills, initiatives like these are crucial in addressing global educational challenges and nurturing a generation of informed global citizens.
