The Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, has pledged support for international students at Babcock University, Ogun State, urging them to prioritise peace and unity as they pursue their academic goals.
Bazivamo gave the charge during the Babcock University International Students Association (BUISA) Cultural Day, held as part of the BUISA Week celebration.
“We proudly stand in solidarity with you, our esteemed students,” the envoy said, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities international students face while studying abroad.
He encouraged them to build friendships, embrace diverse cultures and contribute to a positive African narrative.
He also lauded their collaboration across cultures, describing the event as a “vibrant platform” for celebrating shared humanity and fostering meaningful connections.
Guest speaker and Babcock University alumna, Mrs. Misan Olukuade, emphasised the value of emotional intelligence in intercultural interactions.
She said, “In a globally connected world, learning in a multicultural environment offers opportunities for cultural exchange, broadening of worldview, as well as increased self-confidence.”
Olukuade noted that her experiences within and beyond Babcock had shaped her understanding of workplace ethics, international relations and global culture.
The university’s President/Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing a “home away from home” for foreign students.
“I knew what it felt like to be a foreign student while studying in Sweden, so we will do all we can to give our support,” he said.
“Any institution worth its salt today understands the value of having a diverse student population.”
Tayo appreciated the presence of Ambassador Bazivamo and the representative of the Equatorial Guinean Ambassador, Mr. Juan Segura Yaye.
The cultural week featured a food fair, cultural fashion displays, flag parades and traditional greetings. Speaking at the event, BUISA President and African American student, Ralph Kisob, said the celebration was deeply personal.
“This event means a lot to me because it gives us a definition of who we are,” Kisob said. “I came from the US to study here because of the high academic standards.”
