Sallah: Man Celebrating under drug influence Drowns Inside Kwara Well

Residents of Alapo Compound in the Edun area of Ilorin, Kwara State, were thrown into mourning on Eid day following the shocking death of a middle-aged man who allegedly fell into a domestic well after exhibiting strange behaviour believed to be drug-induced.

The deceased, identified only as Kazeem, and said to be 43 years old, reportedly began acting unusually shortly after returning from the Eid prayer ground on Friday.

According to eyewitnesses, his movements were erratic and suspicious, raising fears that he may have consumed a banned psychoactive substance popularly known as ‘Colorado’ or ‘Colo’.

Efforts to calm him down proved abortive, and in a moment that stunned onlookers, Kazeem was said to have leapt into a nearby well within the compound.

Attempts by neighbours to rescue him failed, prompting an emergency call to the Kwara State Fire Service.

Confirming the incident on Saturday, the Service’s spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters responded swiftly to the distress alert received around 10:29 a.m.

Despite arriving promptly, the team could only retrieve Kazeem’s lifeless body.

“We were notified that someone had plunged into a well in the Edun area. Our operatives moved to the site without delay and carried out the recovery operation. Sadly, the man had died before we arrived.

“The victim reportedly jumped into the well under the influence of a hard substance known as Colo (Colorado) shortly after returning from Eid prayers,” he said.

Adekunle further disclosed that the victim’s remains were handed over to officers from the ‘C’ Division of the Nigeria Police in Ilorin. He noted that the process of formal identification and handover to the family was ongoing.

Director of the State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed concern over the rising abuse of illicit substances, especially during festive periods.

He urged members of the public to shun drug use, warning that such choices often end in sorrow.

“The consequences of substance abuse are always dire,” he cautioned, and urged residents to prioritise safety and mental well-being, especially during celebrations meant to bring joy.”
