Scabies Outbreak Hits Adamawa Correctional Centre

The Yolde Pate Correctional Centre, located in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has been grappling with a scabies outbreak, with 51 inmates confirmed to be infected, according to the state Epidemiologist, Damba Kwinke.

The first case was documented in August 2023, and investigations revealed that individuals held in the Criminal Investigation Department at the state police headquarters were among those affected, including the index case.

Scabies, caused by parasitic mites leading to intense skin itching, is known for its high contagiousness, facilitating easy transmission from person to person and potentially causing secondary skin infections.

Speaking on the situation, Kwinke emphasized the need for hygiene promotion among staff and inmates at the correctional centre to curb the further spread of the outbreak.

The Yolde Pate Correctional Centre is presently the sole facility in the state reporting cases of scabies.

In response to the escalating health crisis, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Barrister Isuwa Misali, took swift action.

Health kits and sanitary materials, comprising 16 different items such as Sulphur ointment, sanitizers, face masks, hypo, hand wash, cotton wool, medicated soap, hard-duty gloves, ORS, and Calamine Lotion, were delivered to the correctional centre.

The move aims to contain the outbreak, offering essential medical supplies to both prevent the further spread of scabies and provide relief to those already affected.

The corrective measures underscore the importance of a coordinated response to health emergencies within correctional facilities, ensuring the well-being of both inmates and staff.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the significance of sustained efforts to maintain hygiene standards within such facilities and prevent the recurrence of health crises in the future.
