The Senate on Wednesday approved a donation of N50 million to the families of two teachers and three soldiers who lost their lives during the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the intervention during plenary, describing the victims’ deaths as painful sacrifices in the nation’s fight against insecurity.
Akpabio said each of the five bereaved families would receive N10 million as financial support in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones.
He also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity.
According to him, the Senate’s donation is intended to cushion the hardship faced by the affected families while honouring those who paid the supreme price during the tragic incident.
The victims were among those affected during the May 15 abduction of pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
The slain teachers were identified as Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly beheaded by the abductors while in captivity, and John Olaleye, who was said to have been shot dead during the attack on the school.
The three soldiers killed during the rescue operation were identified as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome.
Akpabio said the Senate remained committed to recognising the sacrifices of security personnel and civilians who lose their lives in the line of duty or as victims of violent crimes.
The rescue operation, carried out by security operatives, ended the 56-day ordeal of the kidnapped pupils and teachers, bringing relief to their families after weeks of uncertainty.
The abduction occurred on May 15 when gunmen attacked two schools in Oriire Local Government Area, killing one teacher during the invasion and taking pupils and other teachers into captivity. Another teacher was later killed while in the kidnappers’ custody.
