Senate Working On Legal Framework For State Police — Bamidele

The Majority Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, says the National Assembly is developing a legal framework to establish state police as part of efforts to tackle insecurity in the country.

Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District, made this known in his Easter message on Sunday, where he also cautioned political actors against using the country’s challenges for selfish political gains.

He urged leaders at all levels to avoid divisive rhetoric, warning that such actions could worsen the nation’s problems.

“As we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is important we reflect on His virtues and live a life rooted in justice, love, and redemption,” Bamidele said.

He described the recent killings in Benue and Plateau states as contrary to the teachings of peace and love preached by Christ.

The lawmaker also condemned inflammatory statements by some political and sectional figures, noting that such comments undermine unity and national development.

“No country develops when one section rises against another,” he said.

Bamidele added that while the National Assembly is working on legal backing for state police, security agencies must collaborate to arrest the sponsors of violence across the country.

He called on politicians to stop using Nigeria’s internal challenges for political advantage, urging them instead to follow Christ’s example of selflessness and unity.

“Such actors are no longer playing opposition politics, but simply exploiting the country’s condition for their own political goals,” he added.

The senator reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to building a peaceful and united Nigeria, regardless of political or religious differences.
