Former Senator Shehu Sani has disclosed that he narrowly escaped a six-month suspension from the Senate in 2018, following his revelation of federal lawmakers’ remuneration.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central, made this revelation in a recent statement on social media.
In a post shared on his Twitter handle, Sani recounted the events, attributing his reprieve to the immediate intervention of then-Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.
According to Sani, his disclosure of senators’ salaries and allowances, including the controversial revelation of a monthly running cost of N13.5 million per senator and N200 million constituency project funds, provoked strong disapproval from his colleagues.
“When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the senators, it nearly earned me a six-month suspension if not for divine intervention, Saraki and Ekwerenmadu’s immediate rescue,” Sani tweeted.
The former senator also warned of the consequences faced by whistleblowers within the Senate, emphasizing that those who “blow the whistle too loudly” often find themselves isolated without support from fellow members.
Sani’s revelation comes amid recent controversies within the Senate, including the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central for six months.
The decision followed an altercation between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with further allegations emerging regarding improper conduct.
