In a remarkable display of religious unity, members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, commonly known as Shi’ites, participated in a Christmas Service at St Joseph Catholic Church in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State on Monday.

The Shi’ite group, led by Prof Isah-Hassan Mshelgaru, expressed their commitment to strengthening religious harmony and unity between different faith communities.

Prof Mshelgaru emphasized the significance of acknowledging Christmas as a day for festivities, friendliness, and unity, and saw their participation as a way to renew hope for unity among Muslims, Christians, and followers of other religions.

Stressing the importance of collective unity, Mshelgaru highlighted that Islam and Christianity, both revered faiths, collectively represent over 90% of Nigeria’s population.

He stated, “When other faithful unite with the two faith groups, it means the whole of Nigeria is united.”

The Shi’ite leader further explained that their decision to attend the church service aimed at strengthening the relationship between the two faith groups.

Notably, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria has been engaging in such visits for over 25 years, contributing to improved understanding and reduced animosity between the Shi’ites and Christians.

Mshelgaru reflected on the positive impact of these visits, noting that regular exchanges have effectively bridged gaps and fostered open communication.

He said, “The visit has reduced the fears and some animosity between the two faith groups.

They (Christians) are now open to us; we share sentiments and problems together.”

The parish priest, Most Revd Isak Augustine, commended the Islamic group for their visit and encouraged further interactions to strengthen religious harmony and unity.

He concluded the service with a prayer for God’s peace and guidance to overcome the socioeconomic challenges facing the country.
