The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has officially announced that local government elections will be held on October 26, 2024.
This announcement follows the impending end of the current tenure of local government chairmen across the state.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the development is setting the stage for a critical electoral process that will see new leadership for the 20 Local Governments and Councillors for the 236 Wards in Ogun State.
OGSIEC Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, released a statement confirming that the elections will be conducted in accordance with Section 10(1) of the Ogun State Electoral Law 2007.
According to Osibodu, voting will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the election day, ensuring ample time for the electorate to cast their votes.
He said prospective candidates must obtain nomination forms from the Electoral Officers at their respective Local Government Areas by Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
The commission has also issued a comprehensive timetable and guidelines to facilitate a smooth election process.
Detailed Election Timetable
- August 1-15, 2024: Conduct of party primaries and observation by OGSIEC.
- August 16-20, 2024: Collection of Personal Data Forms for candidates by political parties.
- August 21-27, 2024: Submission of Personal Data Forms by candidates.
- August 28 – September 3, 2024: Screening of Councillorship candidates.
- September 4-6, 2024: Screening of Chairmanship candidates.
- September 11, 2024: Delivery of the lists of screened and cleared candidates to political parties.
- September 12-13, 2024: Appeals and substitution of uncleared candidates.
- September 16-18, 2024: Screening of substituted candidates.
- September 19-24, 2024: Collection of nomination forms by all cleared candidates.
- September 25 – October 3, 2024: Submission of nomination forms by all cleared candidates.
- October 7, 2024: Publication of names of qualified candidates.
- October 9-18, 2024: Submission of names and addresses of party agents to OGSIEC and publication of Notice of Poll.
- October 24, 2024: End of electioneering campaigns at midnight.
- October 26, 2024: Election Day.
- November 2, 2024: Possible run-off/re-run elections if necessary.
Mr. Osibodu emphasised the importance of stakeholder cooperation to ensure the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.
He urged all political parties, candidates, and voters to adhere to the guidelines and support the commission’s efforts.
