Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID)
It is an infection of the female reproductive organs. If left untreated, it can lead to scarring of tissues and organs and can also cause infertility.
Symptoms
• Lower abdominal pain.
• Foul smelling vaginal discharge.
• Pain during sexual intercourse.
• Pain and burning sensation during micturition.
• Abdominal tenderness.
• Irregular menstrual flow.
• Nausea and vomiting, etc.
Causes & risk factors
• Microbial invasion.
• Sexually transmitted diseases.
• Opportunistic pathogens & infections.
• Sepsis after surgery.
• Trauma following IUD (Intra-uterine device)
• Vagina douching.
• Multiple sex partners.
Diagnostic Investigation
• History taking.
• Pelvic examination.
• HVS (High Vaginal Swab test).
• Urinalysis.
• Pelvic USS (Ultrasound scan), etc.
Treatment
•Oral administration of prescribed antibiotics.
• Parenteral administration of prescribed antibiotics.
• Surgery in chronic cases.
Prevention
• Avoid multiple sexual partners.
• Encourage the use of barrier method of contraception e.g condoms.
• Treat STDs/STIs as early as possible.
• Improve on personal hygiene measures, especially care of the perineal area.
• After using the toilet, clean from the front to the back (i.e clean the vulva first before cleaning the rectum) in order to prevent opportunistic infections.
• Avoid vagina douching.
*Complications*
• Chronic pelvic pain.
• Tubo- ovarian abscess.
• Infertility, etc.
