Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has officially announced that Monday, March 11, 2024, will mark the commencement of the Ramadan fast in Nigeria.
The declaration was made by Sultan Abubakar in Sokoto on Sunday during a radio and television broadcast, where he revealed the sighting of the new crescent moon.
Reports of the moon sighting were received from various parts of the country, including inputs from Muslim leaders and Islamic organizations.
“After due verification and authentication by the national moon sighting committee and states committees’ confirmation, as well as routine scrutiny, I hereby announce the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan, which signifies the end of Sha’aban 1445 AH,” he stated.
In accordance with Islamic law, Sultan Abubakar called on the Muslim Ummah to commence fasting on Monday, March 11, 2024. He urged the faithful to dedicate themselves to the worship of Allah throughout the holy month and encouraged them to use the period to pray for the peace, progress, and prosperity of the country.
“We call on all Nigerians to continue to live peacefully with one another irrespective of religious, ethnic, or tribal differences,” he emphasized.
Additionally, the Sultan urged affluent individuals to support the less privileged and stressed the importance of increased religious tolerance and brotherhood among citizens.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslim faithfuls observe a month-long fast as a religious obligation compulsory for all adult Muslims.
