The Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has dismissed reports claiming that the revered monarch endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The team described the claim, which has been circulating on social media, as false, malicious and an attempt to drag the Sultan into partisan politics.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka, the media team insisted that the Sultan, as a father figure to all Nigerians, could not publicly or privately support any political candidate.
The statement read, “It is not possible for the Sultan, as the father of all, to make such a statement, either publicly or in any other forum.”
It urged Nigerians to disregard the report, describing it as an unpatriotic attempt to exploit the Sultan’s respected position for selfish political interests.
According to the statement, the Sultan’s traditional and religious offices require him to remain neutral and provide guidance, prayers and fatherly counsel to all Nigerians irrespective of political affiliation.
“It should be made clear once again that the institutions of monarchy and religion led by the Sultan are institutions of a father figure. As such, His Eminence cannot but remain within the purview of that role by offering fatherly, royal and spiritual blessings, as well as guidance, to Nigerian politicians who seek his counsel and blessings,” the statement added.
The media team further stressed that the Sultan’s palace remained open to every Nigerian without discrimination, noting that he had consistently demonstrated fairness in his engagements with political leaders and citizens across party lines.
It warned against linking the Sultan to the campaign or candidature of any aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying such actions were capable of undermining the neutrality of the revered traditional institution.
The statement reaffirmed that the Sultan remained committed to promoting national unity, peace, stability and harmonious coexistence among Nigerians regardless of ethnic, religious or political differences.
It also appealed to journalists, bloggers and social media users to verify information before publishing or sharing it, warning that the spread of unverified reports could mislead the public and unnecessarily draw respected traditional and religious institutions into political controversies.
