In a bid to combat corruption and ensure fair access to essential commodities, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the reported hoarding activities of essential commodities by certain marketers.
The call was made during a meeting between the Sultan and ICPC Commissioner Alhaji Garba Tukur-Idris, who oversees Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara.
Abubakar emphasized that hoarding food items for profit, particularly during Ramadan fasting, is a corrupt practice that goes against religious principles and legal regulations.
“Hoarding essential commodities with the intent to obtain higher gains is against religious doctrines and the laws prohibit such acts because it subjects people to hardship,” remarked Abubakar.
Expressing support for a comprehensive anti-corruption approach, the Sultan urged both ICPC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to collaborate seamlessly in the fight against corruption.
He stressed the importance of avoiding selective investigations, emphasizing that the struggle against corruption needs universal backing.
“We are ready to support you at every level. The Sultanate Council has reprinted books authored by Sheikh Usman Danfodio and his disciples on corruption,” affirmed the Sultan, emphasizing the traditional rulers’ commitment to the cause.
The Sultan cautioned the anti-corruption agencies to uphold honesty and sincerity in their dealings, assuring them of unwavering support from traditional rulers.
He called for a united front in the battle against corruption, reiterating the need for success in the efforts of the anti-corruption agencies.
ICPC Commissioner Tukur-Idris acknowledged the Sultan’s support for the anti-corruption crusade, emphasizing the pivotal role of the agency’s efforts in promoting good governance and national development.
He highlighted the negative impact of corruption on Nigeria’s image, citing underdevelopment and poverty as the consequences.
Tukur-Idris outlined the commission’s multifaceted approach, involving education, sensitization, and active investigations leading to prosecutions and the recovery of funds and goods.
He appealed for collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s positive image, attract investments, and foster both internal and foreign development.
