The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has voiced its dissatisfaction with the appointments made by President Bola Tinubu, particularly in key financial positions, asserting that their earlier campaign for a Muslim-Muslim ticket has now become a source of frustration.
In a statement, the group issued an apology to fellow supporters of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, particularly Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, for feeling abandoned.
They expressed concern that their advocacy for a Muslim-Muslim ticket has seemingly resulted in a government that leans towards a Christian majority.
MURIC, represented by its national coordinator, Professor Ishaq Akintola, took responsibility for their efforts to promote the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
They also cautioned that if this trend continues, President Bola Tinubu’s chances of winning re-election in 2027 could be jeopardized.
The statement further highlighted the group’s dismay that many key appointments under the Tinubu administration have gone to Christians and Yorubas, leaving competent Muslims, including professors, engineers, medical doctors, and doctorate degree holders, overlooked.
MURIC emphasized its rejection of the narrative that competence should be the sole basis for appointments, urging the government to seek competence nationwide, without neglecting any section of Nigeria.
The group also warned against allegations of nepotism, calling on the government to tap into the vast talent pool across the nation, not just focusing on the easily accessible candidates.
MURIC’s message to President Tinubu was clear: the dissatisfaction among Muslims, particularly from the North and South West, cannot be ignored without risking the 2027 elections.
They pointed out that social media discussions and lists favoring certain groups have raised concerns of nepotism and marginalization.
In closing, MURIC stressed the importance of balanced political appointments that consider all regions, faiths, and sections.
They urged President Tinubu to ensure that the North, his strategic ally in the 2023 presidential election, does not feel left out of key political appointments, as this could strain the unity between the North and the South West.
MURIC called for a shift in the government’s approach to appointments, emphasizing inclusivity and fair representation for all ethnic groups and faiths.
Finally, the group expressed regret for their role in advocating for a Yoruba Muslim presidency, acknowledging the frustrations it has caused for Yoruba Muslims and Nigerian Muslims in general.
They apologized to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and others who may have felt misled by their earlier advocacy.
