A notorious terrorist leader, Bello Turji, has levelled serious accusations against the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle.
The allegations, presented in a viral video, claim that Matawalle, who previously served as Zamfara State governor, was complicit in fostering terrorism in Nigeria.
The accusations have prompted a strong rebuttal from Matawalle’s camp.
Turji, known for his involvement in violent attacks across northern Nigeria, including a massacre in Zamfara in early 2022, alleges that Matawalle was supportive of terrorism during his tenure as governor.
In the video, Turji accuses the former governor of backing terrorism, asserting that he possesses evidence to substantiate his claims.
He also suggests that Matawalle’s administration was involved in negotiations with bandits that were sabotaged, further inflaming the controversy.
The accusations come at a time when Matawalle, appointed Minister of State for Defence by President Bola Tinubu in August 2023, is under intense scrutiny.
His tenure as governor was marred by severe criticism due to widespread insecurity in Zamfara State.
Critics argue that his administration struggled to curb the growing influence of banditry, which led to significant violence and instability in the region.
In response, Matawalle’s media consultants have vigorously denied the allegations, describing them as a “fabricated lie.”
Deyemi Saka, Lead Partner at Lambert and Curtis, stated that Turji’s claims are “baseless” and an attempt to undermine Matawalle’s credibility.
Matawalle’s team also suggested that Turji’s accusations are a diversion from the real issues, pointing out that the current Zamfara governor, Dauda Lawal, is alleged to have ties with terrorist elements.
They argue that Lawal’s connection with these groups is evidenced by purported videos showing bandits celebrating his electoral victory and pledging loyalty to him.
