The South-West Caucus of the House of Representatives have described the acts of some recent agitators of Yoruba Nation as threat to the peace and stability of the region.
In a statement signed, jointly, on Monday by the Chairman, Secretary, and Deputy Chief Whip of the caucus, James Faleke, Taofeek Ajilesoro, and Adewunmi Onanuga, respectively, the lawmakers totally condemned the act, calling for quick dialogue in addressing any grievances that led to the invasion.
Recall that some masked men in military uniforms, armed with rifles and charms invaded the Oyo State Governor’s Office and the State House of Assembly Complex, Ibadan, the state capital on Saturday.
The lawmakers therefore, in the statement, stressed that the act of the agitators is unlawful.
The statement read, “As representatives of the people, we stand firmly against any form of unlawful behaviour and violence that undermines the rule of law and the unity of our country, Nigeria.
“All grievances and demands must be addressed through peaceful and lawful means, respecting the rights and well-being of all citizens.
“We urge all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue, prioritise the welfare of our people, and work towards finding peaceful and lasting solutions to any grievances. Violence and lawlessness have no place in our society, and we call on all individuals to uphold the principles of peace, unity, and respect for the rule of law.
“The South West caucus remains committed to upholding the values of democracy, justice, and unity in our region and the country at large. Together, we can overcome challenges and build a better future for all.”
However, speaking to reporters on Monday, two of the arrested agitators said that they didn’t regret their actions, stressing that what they did was lawful.
While speaking, a 55-year-old lecturer at the Federal College of Education (Special), in Oyo State, Alabi Ogundeji, and a 29-year-old phone repairer, Ademola Adeniyi, who were part of the arrested agitators, said they didn’t regret joining the struggle.
Meanwhile, the state Police Commissioner, Hamzat Adebola, also described the act as criminal, unpatriotic and a clear case of treasonable felony and terrorism which would be meted with adequate sanctions.
He explained that the continued existence of Nigeria as a sovereign state is a task that must be accomplished by everyone, stressing that “the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain.”
He, therefore, pledged he would continue to watch criminally minded and misguided individuals or groups who intend to make their livelihood by distorting the relative tranquillity enjoyed by the good people of the state.
